The name of the song caught my attention months ago when I was browsing Nina Simone’s discography after  I finally downloaded it…

Today while driving to work, it played. The song has no music, it’s all Nina’s voice composing the lyrics below.Although the song may mean nothing in our cultural context, there is yet a some kind of depth to it, not to mention that Nina’s voice would capture your senses anyway!

I couldn’t find it on, so feel free to send me your email and I can send it back if you want. For the time being, here are the lyrics…

(1964) Nina Simone, Waring Cuney

She does not know
Her beauty.
She thinks her brown body,
She thinks her brown body
Has no glory.
If she could dance
Under palm trees
And see her image and realize
She would know
Yes, she would know.
But there are no palm trees
In the street,
No palm trees in the street
And dishwater gives back no images.
